A tree that survives a storm isn’t the one with the stiffest branches.
It’s the one that bends.
Burnout has a way of making us forget that.
When we’ve been stretched too far, we often rebuild ourselves with rigid boundaries. Every request feels risky. Every opportunity feels expensive. We promise ourselves, Never again.
For a while, those boundaries protect us.
But over time, they can become a different kind of prison.
Walls don’t just keep pressure out.
They also keep possibility out.
Healthy boundaries aren’t walls.
They’re roots and branches.
The roots keep you grounded in what matters.
The branches know when to bend.
That’s what I call boundary intelligence.
It’s the ability to protect your energy without closing yourself off from life.
To say “no” without guilt.
To say “yes” without resentment.
To know the difference.
Because burnout isn’t proof that you cared too much.
More often, it’s a sign that your boundaries had only one setting.
Always open.
Recovery isn’t about changing that setting to always closed.
It’s about learning that boundaries were never meant to be rigid.
They were meant to be flexible enough to protect you, and wise enough to let the right things in.
Like the tree that bends with the wind.
Still rooted.
Still growing.
Still standing after the storm.
