5 Things I Discovered This Week #8

Reading Time: 2 min

Every week, I share five things I’ve been thinking about across leadership, burnout, parenting, learning and life.

Leadership

What looks like a lack of motivation may simply be motivation directed somewhere else.

The same opportunity can energize one person and leave another unmoved. It made me think about how easily we judge motivation by what we would find motivating.

Perhaps understanding what someone wants is more useful than assuming what they should want.

Burnout

Seeing something doesn’t make it ours to carry.

There is a difference between noticing a problem and becoming responsible for solving it. For people who naturally spot patterns, that boundary can become surprisingly easy to cross.

A thought I keep coming back to: I don’t need to stop seeing what I see. I can become more selective about what I carry.

Parenting

Watching can be part of learning.Children have a wonderful way of reminding us that progress isn’t always immediately visible. Sometimes they participate. Sometimes they repeat. Sometimes they simply watch for a while.

Watching can be part of learning.

What looks like “nothing happening” from the outside may actually be a lot of processing on the inside. Perhaps adults aren’t so different.

Learning

Sometimes a metaphor teaches more than another explanation.

I spent some time this week exploring why metaphors appear so often in approaches such as Acceptance and Commitment Therapy.

A good metaphor doesn’t necessarily tell us something we didn’t know. It changes how we see something we already know. And sometimes that shift in perspective is what makes an idea finally stick.

A Question I’m Sitting With

When do credentials build capability and when do they simply validate capability already there?

Credentials can build knowledge, trust and access. But at what point does another qualification stop changing what you can actually do?

If you already have the capability to create the outcome you want, when is it time to stop preparing and start doing?

I don’t have an answer yet. It’s a question I’m sitting with.

Until next week,

Hi, I’m Megha, founder of OutOfTheBurn. I’m interested in a question that sits beneath burnout: why do capable, ambitious people keep pushing even when the way they are working is no longer sustainable? My work explores the patterns behind that question - our relationship with ambition, responsibility, boundaries, pressure, and identity - drawing on Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP), and behavioural design. OutOfTheBurn is about finding a way to pursue meaningful ambition without making wellbeing the price of achievement. Ambition with Ease. Work Well. Burn Bright. Not Out.
