5 Things I discovered this Week #16

Reading Time: 2 min

Every week, a few ideas stick. Some come from work. Some from parenting. Some from getting things wrong and noticing what happened next.

Here are my five for this week.

1. Leadership

Ever noticed how one explanation can turn into five? We explain a decision, add context, anticipate objections, and eventually start answering questions nobody asked. Sometimes the extra detail helps. Sometimes we’re simply uncomfortable leaving space for another person’s interpretation.

Leadership requires knowing what deserves an explanation. It also requires knowing when you’ve said enough.

Clarity can get lost in the effort to provide more of it.

2. Burnout

Burnout doesn’t always begin with too much work. Sometimes it begins with feeling guilty about resting. For ambitious people, even an early bedtime can feel like lost time. A quiet afternoon comes with a mental list of everything they could be doing instead.

Yet sleep supports the concentration, judgment and creativity that make meaningful work possible. We learn how to push ourselves towards our goals, but rarely how to recognise when we’ve pushed enough.

The key is to remember that the body doesn’t negotiate deadlines forever.

3. Parenting

As adults, we may understand why our parents made certain choices and still carry resentment about them. Becoming parents ourselves adds another perspective. We begin to realise that even well-intentioned decisions can leave lasting impressions on a child.

Our intentions shape how we parent. Our children’s experiences reveal what those intentions become.

4. Learning

There has probably never been so much available to learn. Books, courses, podcasts, articles, and a new expert appearing on our feeds every morning. The challenge is no longer finding something worth learning. It’s deciding what deserves our attention.

With so much knowledge available, perhaps learning also means getting comfortable with what we choose to miss.

5. A Question I’m Sitting With

The reward for getting things done is often more things to do.

You get so used to doing that you rarely question whether there’s a better way to use your energy.

What are you still doing every day that you could instead build a system to take care of?

Until next week,

OutoftheBurn — Ambition with Ease

Hi, I’m Megha, founder of OutOfTheBurn. I’m interested in a question that sits beneath burnout: why do capable, ambitious people keep pushing even when the way they are working is no longer sustainable? My work explores the patterns behind that question - our relationship with ambition, responsibility, boundaries, pressure, and identity - drawing on Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP), and behavioural design. OutOfTheBurn is about finding a way to pursue meaningful ambition without making wellbeing the price of achievement. Ambition with Ease. Work Well. Burn Bright. Not Out.
